When I first read the article, in the Freelance Star, on the FGM project I knew this was what I had been looking for. The last four years, we have been in the High School /College mode. It had been a whirlwind and this fall, I finally had time to do something else. Fairy Godmother was it!
I am the “Hairlady”. I go to visit families and cut their hair. Dads & kids get in on the deal too! Sometimes a little simple color or a little nail painting for some very sweet young ladies. I do my best to make growing hair look fabulous. I get to do what I love! A little pampering and a good haircut is magic, you can do anything when your hair is done well.
I also like to cook BIG so that part is easy for me. I try to respond to the challenges of each family and make dinners as nutritious and kid friendly as possible. The women I have met, either volunteers or families, have been so loving and welcoming. The first time I delivered dinner to the cooler on the porch I was a bit nervous. Then I realized that SOMEONE DOESN’T HAVE TO COOK! They get to sit and spend time with their children.
We have been involved in volunteer work together as a family or where our individual interests have led us. It has been inspiring for each of us and a very good example for our grandchildren. Giving of yourself always brings out something you didn’t expect. Listen to your heart and let the rest just happen. Everyone benefits when what you do is a gift of time, love, and compassion.

About a year ago, I began following Declan’s Journey on Facebook. Through them, I kept hearing more and more about children and families battling pediatric cancer. It was heartbreaking. What these children and families dealt with daily…I couldn’t imagine one of my own children suffering from cancer. Yet here were these families, enduring pain beyond comprehension. I wanted to do something. I wanted to help…some way…any way…but I didn’t know how. When the 5K benefiting Journey 4 A Cure was organized in Richmond in the fall of 2011, I volunteered, and though it was fulfilling, it wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more. I wanted to make more of a difference on a regular basis. It was through Facebook that I heard about Fairy Godmother Project. After reading their blog, I remember immediately thinking “THIS is the organization I want to commit to”! It was perfect…providing meals and housecleaning, etc for pediatric cancer families…I could certainly devote a few hours a month to something like this. Fredericksburg was too far away, but when the Richmond Chapter formed, I immediately volunteered. I am HAPPY to make meals, fundraise and clean for these families. I want to make things easier for them while they fight pediatric cancer. I want to help people, especially these people. And volunteering with Fairy Godmother Project is my way to do that.
